Children of Durban Outreach - Hamba Nambi

The Children Care Centre (CCC)

We have many ongoing projects for CCC which includes educating the professional development and training for staff members, bursaries for children, sourcing premises for CCC and the feeding of the children weekly. The discussion for CCC is endless but for the purpose of convenience, we provide you with a report on a few of the ongoing projects.

Teacher Training and Bursaries

The teacher training for the educators of CCC is held at the Caversham Institute. The teachers receiving training in 2022 were: Hamba Nami Newsletter: Review of 2022:

  • Mary – Louise for a Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Development;
  • Petronella for her second year in a Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Development; and
  • Beatrice who is currently in her third year for a National Diploma in Early Childhood Development.

All three of the teacher training fees have been generously sponsored by a member of the Church, a private individual and an educational Trust who also extended their school fees bursary sponsorship.

We also received on behalf of CCC sponsorship for 10 children bursaries at CCC for 2022 which were fully paid. These children are selected based on their personal circumstances and financial need for assistance.

We thank Jill Smith for her oversight and her ongoing interaction with CCC on these projects.

Soup Deliveries

The Soup and Transport Committees operate tirelessly every week and are the “heart” of Hamba Nami in every sense. Weekly the soup committee is responsible for making the soup and the transport committee is responsible for delivering soup to CCC. The wonderful ladies dedicate time each week to make fresh, healthy soup. The atmosphere in the kitchen is always filled with joy and the soup never stops flowing.

The Committees run independently with little effort from the Hamba Nami team. The committees were one of the first to be established in meeting for the immediate need to feed the little mouths of the children at CCC who may not receive a meal at home.

Without the soup committee, Hamba Nami would never be able to feed the hungry mouths that is so desperately needed.

I would like to thank the soup committee which is overseen by Maree De Wet and her team which consists of Annie Collins, Monica Campbell Brown, Marie Marcus and Joan Deare. These wonderful ladies work tirelessly every week to make the soup which is delivered to the CCC every week.

The transport committee also needs to be thanked which is overseen by Allison Ferreira and her team consists of Erica Campbell and Trevor Rayson with recent additions of GlennB Brickell and Brenda Van Der Berg. I would also like to thank Clive Wood who has relocated to England and also assisted with transporting soup this year. The transport committee deliver between 40 – 48 litres the soup to CCC every Friday morning without fail. Their dedication is always amazing and never ceases to fail. For all that they do, we are forever grateful to the soup committee and transport committee that is the backbone of Hamba Nami.

Blanket Drive

MMC and members of the community donated a volume of blankets to be distributed. Members of the community and the members of MMC attended to assist with the handing out of blankets to the homeless. The event was well supported and we were able to hand out 100 – 150 blankets.

I have overseen the Blanket Drive and I am hopeful that another similar event can be held next year.

Santa Bags

The Santa Bags supports Christmas gifts for CCC and the Dalton Play Group. Many of the children do not receive a Christmas gift so we have undertaken to ensure that every child receives a gift from Hamba Nami.

We were aware of the financial strain of the economy and therefore, we requested a small (unisex) toy, a packet of chips and a sweet in a giftbag for a child.

We collected a total of 93 bags for both CCC and Dalton (16 bags). The teachers received vouchers from a corporate sponsor.

We would like to thank those that gave so generously to the Santa Bags which were so beautifully packed and prepared.
